Purpose
Our purpose is to assist the Media to be informed of our forthcoming Growth & Development Summit to be held on the 16 October 2006 at the Maropeng World Heritage Site.
Objectives of the GDS
Our objectives through the summit are to amongst others;
i) Evaluate the performance of the local economy and its impact onĀ job creation and economic growth,
ii) Reduction of unemployment through social partnership, particularly with business and labour.
iii) Development of human capital and new skills the economy needs to grow and for people to find employment,
iv) Assessment and impact assistance provided to small businesses and creation of new opportunities for historically disadvantaged in the last few years, particularly for those residing in the second economy,
v) Reduction of poverty though economic and business enterprise investment,
vi) Improvement of physical infrastructure, such as roads and the integration of the local economy into the provincial economy,
vii) Assessment and level of social security support from the state and how we can reduce such dependants,
viii) Deepen and consolidate our co-ordination and integration with the Gauteng City Region concept.
Critical to a sound appraisal of the above is the data and information of the
macro economy of the West Rand.
In this regard, KPMG has been appointed and they are due to release the data
on the overall macro-economic performance of the local economy in the next
week or so. This will contribute further in the quality of discussion of social
partners, and enhance the strategies of economic growth and effective social
development into the future.
Outcomes of the GDS
Through our GDS, we hope an environment will be created to pursue socio
economic development in which employment can be created and for the
attraction of capital inflow and reduction of competitive risk in the local
economy.
That a new environment will be facilitated for greater Public Sector
Investment to accure in the local economy. To deepen democratic participation and accountability thereby ensuring socio-economic growth and development Contribute our share in the reduction of unemployment and poverty by 50% in 2014, Strengthening of SMME sector and creation of new opportunities. In the short term create Expanded Public Works programme to alleviate poverty in the second economy.
